AN ANCIENT TAMIL HYMN REIMAGINED THROUGH CINEMATIC ORCHESTRATION
“Muthaitharu” is a contemporary orchestral interpretation of a sacred 15th-century Thiruppugazh by the revered Tamil saint-poet Arunagirinathar.
The hymn celebrates the wisdom, courage, compassion and divine grace of Lord Muruga, portraying him both as a compassionate spiritual guide and as the divine warrior who overcomes the forces of arrogance, ignorance, desire and inner darkness.
In this recording, S. J. Jananiy builds an entirely new sonic architecture around the original devotional material. Rather than presenting the traditional composition with orchestral accompaniment, she translates its spiritual and dramatic narrative into a contemporary cinematic language while preserving the integrity and devotional essence of the Thiruppugazh tradition.
RAGA SHANMUKHAPRIYA · 7/8 RHYTHM · CONTEMPORARY ORCHESTRATION
Set in the majestic Raga Shanmukhapriya and shaped around a distinctive 7/8 rhythmic framework, Muthaitharu brings together Indian classical melodic language, intricate rhythmic structures and contemporary orchestral production.
The arrangement continuously evolves in intensity, giving the centuries-old text a cinematic scale while keeping its devotional identity at the centre.
“URUVAAY ARUVAAY”
The musical journey begins with “Uruvaai Aruvaai,” conceived and arranged by S. J. Jananiy as a sacred prelude to Muthaitharu.
Nadaswaram and Tavil establish an unmistakable South Indian temple atmosphere. Layered vocal textures and orchestral harmonies gradually widen the sonic space, moving from stillness towards anticipation.
This opening creates a spiritual and dramatic bridge into the energy of Muthaitharu, with each musical element carefully placed to contribute to the larger narrative.
BULGARIAN NATIONAL RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
A defining element of the recording is the integration of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra is woven into the architecture of the composition rather than functioning as mere accompaniment. Jananiy creates a dialogue between Indian melodic contours and Western symphonic textures.
THE RHYTHM OF THE NARRATIVE
Rhythm becomes a principal storytelling device in Muthaitharu.
S. J. Jananiy combines Tavil, Mridangam, Kanjira, Djembe, Udukke and Maracas with contemporary rhythmic elements to create constantly shifting textures and momentum.
Traditional Indian rhythmic language interacts with cinematic action-score energy, reflecting the hymn's imagery of Lord Muruga confronting and overcoming powerful forces of darkness.
VOICE, SWARA & RHYTHMIC PRECISION
Arunagirinathar's Thiruppugazh poetry is renowned for its intricate syllabic structures and exceptionally challenging rhythmic phrasing.
Drawing upon her background as an A-Grade All India Radio artist and Indian classical vocalist, S. J. Jananiy moves through the demanding vocal architecture with precision and expressive freedom.
